I saw this painting at the private view and was quite struck by it....on reflection I think I was slightly hoodwinked by some of the more interesting marks. This seems to me to be a now traditional form the swatchbook of painterly techniques amassed together interacting in some way other, as a form when done at its best it can be transformative, fluid and unexpected. In this case however more seems less. Here I am afraid I just find it prosaic although I would have thought unintentionally. It seems to want to suggest bombast but is a bit like the super crazy guy at the party you just want to avoid. Eager to please as with quite a bit of the work in this show it has a certain needyness I find rather unappealing Worth going to this show just to see John Wilkens green painting though!

Babble,

I think you make some fine points. I'm wondering would you say similar things about Albert Oehlen? Or would his work be different? Just wondering!

as a form when done at its best it can be transformative, fluid and unexpected' this applies to oelhan. he does make some works that seem a bit formuliac but the really good ones (or maybe the really bad ones) are something else entirely. These more often than not are the ones where there are two or three interesting historical /stylistic fluctuations going on (Gezeichnete Hunde (2005)) when he gets up to seven or eight then I tend to tune out....

This was a pretty interesting show, although the Medjesi-Jones painting was not the best on show. For me the most interesting works were by Neal Tait and Chris Baker. There was also quite a nice Emma Biggs and Matthew Collings but I'm still undecided whether it is little more than pretty colouring in, but I still enjoyed it so maybe I'm missing the point.
